Skill Level: Beginner to Pro.
Items you will need to complete this tutorial are:
1. Image of your own choice (I no longer will supply images for tutorials). Your image should have enough space around the piece that you want to use that when you make your selection around it that you will not be touching any of the four sides of the whole image. You will also need some colors from your image to use for the silk and matting so choose your colors before doing the "Silk and Satin" tutorial below.
2. Your silk pattern (see tutorial link for silk and satin below)
3. Super Blade Pro or any filter that you can create glitter or gold's or silver for the final frame.
4. DC Layers Filter found here. Close window after download to return here.
You will need to complete another tutorial first before doing the Silk and Satin Framed Image. You will find the "Silk and Satin" tutorial here. The link will open in a new window for you. Just close the window to come back here.
If you find that you cannot create the silk you will need please use the "Tutorial Help" link at the bottom of this page, and I will contact you and help you out by asking a few questions and then creating the silk for you. I do urge you to try to create your silk first though.
Now that you have your "silk" created it's time to begin the next portion of this tutorial.
Step 1:
Open the image you are using that has the portion that you want to frame. Below is a sample of what I mean, where I have a selection of the portion I will be using for this tutorial. Make your selection tool the active tool. Set the selection to "Ellipse" and the "Feather" to around 10 and make your selection. The "feathering" is very important in this step as it will give you a softer edge around your image!

Step 2:
With your selection made and the marching ants marching Go Edit/Copy then go Edit/Paste as new image and your left with this (only it will be your own image)

Step 3:
At this point you need to make your canvas size larger. I chose to do it this way because it is easier to do rather than start with a canvas that may be too small or even too large. Go Image/Canvas Size and add the extra space around your image. The reason will become apparent a little later in the tutorial. Your numbers should reflect on the size of your image. I happen to like a lot of space for this tutorial.

Step 4:
Add a new layer and then move that layer down to the bottom. Make that new layer the active layer. Make your "eyedropper" the active tool and choose a color from your image to use as the first "Matt" board. Then flood fill that bottom layer with your chosen color.

Step 5:
This step is an optional step. Give your bottom layer some texture it does not matter what filter you use to get the texture. I used Filters Unlimited 2 Paper Textures and chose Papyrus and changed the settings a little.

You may use PSP's own texturizer as well. It does not have to be Filters Unlimited 2, play around until you have something that you like.
Step 6:
Make your top layer the active layer it's time to add some shadow to your image. Again when you apply the shadow chose a shadow color from your image, you will see later the advantage of doing this. Use settings below or settings that you prefer. You need to do your shadows twice once in the negative and once in the positive.

Now comes the fun part of this tutorial.
Step 7:
Add a new layer and make sure it is the top layer. Open up your silk image and change your top color to pattern and then chose your silk image. Flood fill the top layer with your silk. Don't worry that you cannot see your image you will see it shortly.
Step 8:
Go Effects/Plugins/DC Layer/Mergency II

Step 9:
Merge all visible layers Do Not Flatten the image!

Step 10:
Again you need to enlarge your canvas size, the amount you use should be a suitable amount for the final frame size. A good amount is around 20 - 30 pixels.
Step 11:
Using your magic wand tool touch the transparent area do not forget to set the feathering back to zero and go Selection/Promote to layer. Then flood fill the selection with white and using a plugin of your choice make it gold or silver depending on what is suitable for your image. Do not deselect yet.
Step 12:
Go Selection/Invert and apply a cutout and do not use flood with color. Then you can merge all layers and resize if you want to I left mine large for this tutorial.
This tutorial is now complete and I hope you have enjoyed doing it as I did writing it. Don't forget you can always email me for help using the "Help" form link.
